Per-contact pricing is killing your margins (and how to escape it)
Why marketing platforms price by contacts, what it really costs as your list grows, and three ways to stop paying more every time someone joins your list.
Key takeaways
Most funnel and email platforms tie price to list size, so your software bill grows faster than your revenue. On ClickFunnels, passing 10,000 contacts moves you from $97 to $197 a month, and passing 75,000 takes you to $297. You can escape this by cleaning your list, choosing flat-priced tools, or self-hosting, where the only things that scale with your list are server size and email sending costs.
You grow your list from 5,000 to 20,000 people. Revenue goes up, which is great. Then your marketing software bill jumps a tier, then another, and the gap between what you earn per subscriber and what you pay per subscriber gets smaller every month.
That's per-contact pricing, and nearly every hosted funnel and email platform uses some version of it.
How the tiers actually work
Here's what list growth costs on ClickFunnels. Prices are from clickfunnels.com/pricing, checked October 2026, billed monthly:
| Contacts | Plan | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10,000 | Launch | $97/mo |
| Up to 75,000 | Scale | $197/mo |
| Up to 150,000 | Optimize | $297/mo |
| Up to 400,000 | Dominate | $5,997/yr |
No single tier is outrageous on its own. The problem is the shape: cost is a staircase tied to a number that only ever goes up, and it says nothing about whether those contacts are buying.
Why this hurts more than it looks
1. Most of your list isn't buying. On a typical list, a minority of contacts open regularly and far fewer buy. You pay the same for a contact who bought three times as for one who signed up for a free PDF in 2022 and never opened an email.
2. Lead magnets get more expensive. A webinar that brings in 3,000 leads isn't just ad spend. It can also push you into the next plan permanently.
3. Agencies pay it many times over. If you run funnels for clients, every client's list counts against a limit, or each client needs their own plan.
4. It punishes keeping data. The rational move on a per-contact plan is to delete people. That's fine for hygiene, but it also throws away purchase history and segmentation data.
Three ways out
1. Clean your list (works on any platform)
Set up a re-engagement sequence for contacts with no opens or clicks in 90–180 days. People who still don't engage get removed. That alone often drops you a tier, and it improves deliverability too, because inbox providers notice when you keep mailing people who ignore you.
2. Choose flat-priced or usage-priced tools
Some platforms charge by features rather than contacts. Others charge strictly per email sent. Usage pricing means a quiet month costs less, and a large but dormant list costs nothing to keep.
3. Self-host your funnel and email stack
When you run the software yourself, the software has no reason to count your contacts. What still scales with your list:
| Cost | How it scales |
|---|---|
| Server | Gradually. A 4 GB VPS handles a lot, and upgrading costs a few dollars a month. |
| Email sending | Per email, not per contact. Amazon SES is about $0.10 per 1,000 emails. |
| Software | Doesn't scale with contacts |
Launchtic is built for this. It's a source-available funnel builder with checkout, CRM, email broadcasts and automations that you install on your own server. The Free tier has no contact limits and no monthly fee. A 50,000-contact list costs the same in software as a 500-contact list: $0.
A rough comparison at 50,000 contacts
| Software / month | Notes | |
|---|---|---|
| ClickFunnels Scale | $197 | 75,000-contact tier |
| Launchtic self-hosted | $0 + ~$10–20 server | Plus sending: 4 broadcasts to 50,000 people is 200,000 emails, about $20 on Amazon SES |
The trade-off
Self-hosting means you're responsible for the server: updates (one command with Launchtic), backups and an email provider account. If you'd rather never SSH into anything, a flat-priced hosted tool is the better choice.
But if your list is growing and your software bill is growing with it, it's worth doing the maths once. Your list is an asset. You shouldn't pay rent on every name in it.
Next steps: install Launchtic in about 10 minutes, or try the live demo first.
